The break down of the Kit contents
Fingerprint kit – simply open the fingerprint ink strip, firmly and individually place your child’s clean fingers onto the ink strip and transfer over to the correct positioning on the kit. Recommendations, if your children are under the age of 3, do this section of the kit whilst he/she is asleep in order to avoid an inky mess.
DNA – Parents use the enclosed sterile cotton swab to collect and apply the child’s saliva to the DNA Isolation Card. The Card is a specially treated, absorbent membrane which isolates and preserves pure DNA from a child’s saliva sample. This DNA collection is stable and usable for a 14 year period, with no requirement of refrigeration. The collection needs to be taken 30 minutes after your child has had anything to eat or drink, this ensures that the DNA is pure. A recommendation – take the DNA Sample first thing in the morning, just as the child awakes, in this way you are certain that your child has not had anything to eat or drink for a few hours. Simply rub the cotton swab onto the inside check of your child’s mouth and transfer immediately onto the collection area.
Duplicate Kit – this kit does not contain fingerprints or DNA, it is an additional kit which can be kept at another safe location i.e. your child’s school or with the child’s caregiver for added security
Billy’s 10 Rules of Stranger Safety – an A3 full colour poster detailing rules of stranger safety – this is a fun way to interact and teach your child awareness towards strangers – there is also a funky music CD option available, it’s a wonderful sing-a-long educational opportunity….
Pro-Kids Application form – Pro-kids is a database supplied by SACMEC (South African Centre for Missing and Exploited Children) go to www.missingkids.co.za to find out more. Completing this application is not a requirement – it is only an additional option for those who are interested in having their kids recorded onto a database
Photograph – the photograph should be in full colour, head and shoulders, no hats or sunglasses etc
